A bit about Laki.
Laki Karavias is a Greek-American filmmaker and family media producer, splitting his time between Europe and the Pacific Northwest.
Having spent much of his childhood abroad and with a strong international focus in his documentary work, Laki is drawn to stories that transport audiences beyond American borders, offering a window into the lives of extraordinary people he has encountered on his travels—stories that balance gravitas and whimsy while remaining deeply human.
His work has been featured on Upworthy, VOX, Forbes, Newswire, and Ad Week. His narrative and documentary films have screened at and won awards at Oscar and BAFTA-qualifying festivals worldwide. In 2020, his documentary Messania’s Story won the grand prize at Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival, making it an Academy Award contender for Best Documentary Short Subject.
With over a decade of experience in family media, Laki leads creative development at Big World Audio Theatre, a Family Choice Award-winning children’s media company. He also developed and creatively directed the film department for A Kids Company About.
Beyond filmmaking, Laki is passionate about expanding access to film education for youth in underserved communities, both in the U.S. and internationally.
